In this beginner's guide to wine tasting, we'll cover basic wine terms and everything you need to know to get started.

Firstly, why do we love wine?

Taste Wine

Wine has a complex and nuanced flavour that appeals to many people. Depending on the grape variety, region, and winemaking process, wine can exhibit subtle differences in a range of flavours, including fruity, earthy, spicy, or floral notes. Some people enjoy the taste of wine on its own, while others appreciate it as a complement to food.

Social experience

Wine is often consumed in social settings, such as dinner parties, wine tastings, or other gatherings, and most wines are perfect for such occasion. Sharing a bottle of wine can create a sense of connection and relaxation among people.

Wine hampers and gifts can also be used as a wonderful gift any time of the year!

Health benefits

Many studies have shown that moderate wine consumption can have health benefits, such as reducing the risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer. This can make wine an attractive option for people who want to enjoy a drink while also taking care of their health.

Tradition and culture

Wine has a long history and is deeply ingrained in many cultures around the world. For some people, drinking wine is a way to connect with their heritage or celebrate a particular occasion.

Aesthetic appeal

Wine is often associated with luxury and sophistication. Many people enjoy the ritual of opening a bottle of wine, pouring it into a glass, and savouring it slowly.

Wine Tasting Tips

Step 1: Look

The first step in wine tasting is to observe the wine. Hold the glass up to the light and take note of the colour and clarity. White wines can range from pale straw to golden yellow, while red wines can range from light ruby to deep purple. The colour of the wine can give you clues about its age and grape variety. For example, a young red wine will be bright and vibrant in colour, while an older red wine will be more brick-like in colour.

To taste wine, swirl it in the wine glass to release its aromas and take note of any "legs" that form on the inside of the glass. Legs are the droplets that form and run down the inside of the glass after you swirl the wine. The wine's alcohol content causes them and can give you an idea of the wine's body and texture.

Examples of wines to try for this step:

White wine: Chardonnay

Red wine: Pinot Noir

Step 2: Smell

The next step in wine tasting is to smell the wine. Put your nose to the glass and take a deep breath. Try to identify the different aromas you smell, such as fruit, baking spices, or flowers. Don't worry if you can't pinpoint the exact scents; the important thing is to start training your nose to recognise different aromas.

Examples of wines to try for this step:

White wine: Sauvignon Blanc

Red wine: Cabernet Sauvignon

Step 3: Taste

Now it's time to taste the wine. Take a sip and let it roll around your mouth. Try to identify the different tasting notes, such as fruit, oak, or tannins. Pay attention to the wine's acidity, sweetness, and body. You can also try "chewing" the wine by swishing it around your mouth to get a better sense of its texture. If you're tasting blind, keep notes of what you taste.

Some expert wine tasters may also be able to tell the grapes' growing climate!

Examples of wines to try for this step:

White wine: Riesling

Red wine: Merlot

Step 4: Evaluate

After you've tasted the wine, take a moment to evaluate it. Did you enjoy it? Was it too dry, did it have high acidity, or was it a sweet wine? Does it taste balanced? Did it have a long finish or a short finish? Take notes if you'd like to remember what you liked or didn't like about the wine.

Examples of wines to try for this step:

White wine: Pinot Grigio

Red wine: Shiraz/Syrah

Wine tasting is a fun and rewarding experience that anyone can enjoy. By following these simple steps, you can start to develop your palate and learn to appreciate the nuances of different wines. Remember, there are no right or wrong answers when it comes to wine tasting – the most important thing is to trust your own taste buds and have fun!

Examples of wine tasting events or tours that you can try out:

Wine tasting events are held by local wine clubs or wineries.

Vineyard tours that offer tastings and educational seminars.

Wine festivals and fairs, where you can try a variety of wines from different regions and producers.

Basic Wine Terms

Learning a few basic wine terms can make wine tasting easier and more enjoyable. Whether you prefer red wine, white wine, or rosé, understanding how to taste wine helps you appreciate its flavour profile and balance.

Aroma (Nose): The smell of the wine. Swirl the glass to release fruity, floral, or spicy aromas; think tropical fruits in Sauvignon Blanc or baking spices in Pinot Noir.

Body: How heavy the wine feels in your mouth, from light-bodied whites to full-bodied reds like Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tannins: Found in grape skins and oak barrels, these create a dry, slightly bitter feeling on the tongue and help the wine taste balanced.

Acidity: Gives wine its tart, refreshing edge. Wines with high acidity make your mouth water and taste lively.

Sweetness: Caused by residual sugar or riper grapes. Some sweet wines are rich and fruity, while others are crisp and dry.

So why not grab a few bottles of wine and some friends, and start your own wine tasting adventure? You might just discover your new favourite wine!
